Memorial Day paying homage to our fallen comrades
Command Sgt. Maj. David S. Davenport,
Fort Bliss Command Sergeant Major:
President John F. Kennedy once said, “A nation reveals itself not only by the men it produces but also by the men it honors, the men it remembers.”
This weekend, servicemembers across the world will gather with families and friends in recognition of Memorial Day. Some may see this weekend as the unofficial kickoff of summer; but I ask Team Bliss Soldiers to never forget the true meaning of what this weekend is really about.
We set aside time each year to contemplate the great deeds and enormous sacrifices of Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines, Coast Guardsmen and civil servants who willingly took to the battlefield and paid the ultimate sacrifice for our liberties and freedoms.
Memorial Day is a federal holiday honoring our fallen comrades, preserving their lasting memory and certainly, their service and sacrifice. We have witnessed devastating loss in wars past and present. The lives of those we honor have a story to tell and a family left behind. It is in their honor, their memory that I ask each and every one of you to never forget those who have come before you.
On Monday, Team Bliss will host a Memorial Day ceremony at 9 a.m. at the Fort Bliss National Cemetery. I would like to encourage those who are not traveling to join us and pay homage to our fallen comrades.
The United States military represents the world’s greatest instrument of democracy, peace and humanitarian assistance. All we do in this world is possible because of the legacy of those we honor for Memorial Day.
