WHITE SANDS MISSILE RANGE, N.M. – Soldiers and technology from the 1st Armored Division’s 2nd Brigade Combat Team became the focus of KPI Production Company’s pilot episode of “Battle Lab” last week during a six-week Network Integration Evaluation here.

KPI is a New York City Emmy award-winning production company that has created programming for such channels such A&E, Discovery, National Geographic, History and the Military Channel.

KPI joined the brigade for a few days in the field with the goal of getting footage and interviews to use in the creation of a pilot episode of “Battle Lab,” a show that will highlight technologies used in today’s military.

“We want to tell the story of the technologies with the Soldiers, we want to be able to get a feel for how they fight and how the technology fits into their fight,” said Justin Galler, producer. “I think it helps make the show more real for the audience. It tells the Soldier story; at the same time, it tells about the technology. We all agree ultimately it’s all about the Soldier.”

With all the systems and technologies being tested, there is a lot for film crews to cover and a lot that can’t be captured in just a few days.

“I think the biggest thing we want to follow up on later is the ‘net warrior,’” said Ted Poole, producer. “It’s such a new concept and the idea really connects with the audience the show is targeting.”

“We have this very young [demographic] that is into the technology and graphics and the idea you have a Soldier who can just flip down a ‘visor’ that can show a map of where the troops are and what’s going on at different locations is one thing we definitely want to follow up on,” he said.

“We’ve got a good portion of what we need and are looking forward to putting it all together, but it’s a good experience,” said Poole. “Everyone we’ve met has been great, all the personnel, the lieutenants and captains, they’ve all been helpful. Everyone’s been a real pleasure to work with.”

The proposed pilot is set to air November 2011 on the G4 Network, a division of NBC Universal. G4 TV is geared primarily toward young adult viewers interested in gaming and technology.
