Capt. Jason P. Koontz,
11th ADA Bde. Public Affairs:
Members of A Battery, Terminal High-Altitude Air Defense, 11th Air Defense Artillery Brigade, played sports, danced and socialized with students of East Point Elementary School Friday in an effort to encourage the children to live an active and healthy lifestyle.
The battery and East Point are involved in the Army’s Partners in Education program. The program pairs Army units with schools that have a need for volunteers.
The partnership is beneficial for the students and for the Soldiers. One of the volunteers, Pfc. Maureen Marcia, said that she really enjoyed having a day to play with the children. She also said that it was fun showing the children that exercise is a part of the Army lifestyle.
Sgt. Shane Szymczak explained the Soldier’s role in the physical fitness event.
“We are out here to show the children that living an active lifestyle can be fun, and, when it’s fun, they will want to keep doing it!” said Szymczak.
A Btry. has been partnered with the school for more than two years. The Soldiers volunteer their time playing sports, reading to classes and supporting the school’s events with manpower.
