The 1st Battalion, 77th Armor Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, welcomed a new battalion commander during the unit’s change of command ceremony Friday on Highlander Parade Field at East Fort Bliss.
Taking command of the “Steel Tigers” is Lt. Col. Trent Hunton.
Lt. Col Lance Moore, the outgoing commander, was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal during a ceremony before the change of command. Moore’s wife, Mary, was also recognized for her contributions to the battalion.
Moore commanded the battalion during their most recent deployment to Iraq. Their mission was to respond whenever and wherever they were needed across the country.
“The Steel Tigers operated as the operational reserve under General [Lloyd] Austin, with the responsibility to move by ground or air, light or heavy, to anywhere in Iraq to ensure the successful conclusion of Operation New Dawn,” said Col. Scott McKean, the brigade commander. “The Steel Tigers not only accomplished that task but did it at a standard that was noted by all theater commanders.”
Moore’s next assignment will be at Joint Task Force-North, which is also located at Fort Bliss.
“It has been my greatest honor to serve as Tiger 6,” said Moore.
Hunton, the incoming commander, has most recently served as the chief of effects for the Brigade Modernization Command at Fort Bliss. He will soon deploy to Afghanistan to lead Security Force Assistance Adviser Teams assigned to the battalion.
“I couldn’t be more proud to be associated with this great battalion,” said Hunton. ‘‘We have many challenges ahead, but I’m encouraged by the demonstration of talent, teamwork and dedication to mission that I have witnessed for the last several weeks.”
