The El Paso community gathered for the sixth annual summer carnival from May 25 to Sunday in Ascarate Park, hosted by the Benavidez-Patterson “All Airborne” Chapter, 82nd Airborne Division Association of El Paso.
Rick Trevizo, of the 82nd Airborne Chapter, said the funds raised from the carnival mainly benefit Soldiers, veterans and family members of the 82nd Airborne Division. The summer carnival proceeds provide assistance for educational scholarships, veterans in the Department of Defense and community projects.

“You have to be airborne, which means a qualified jumper. We have many members that are from the 82nd, 101st, Special Forces and Marines,” said Trevizo. The All-American chapter, a membership of mixed airborne troops, opened the summer carnival this Memorial Day weekend in hopes of bringing the community together.
“For a lot of Soldiers, when they get out of the service they have problems getting the benefits that they deserve. [Soldiers] run into some problems, through the Veterans Affairs or the government programs,” said Trevizo. “We have advisers at the chapter that are trained to help Soldiers who are getting out of the Army today and veterans who have been out for years.”

The 17-day carnival featured new rides, games and prizes, with an admission starting at $2. Patrons had the opportunity to ride the 110-foot Ferris wheel that towered over the fair, and the popular spinning ride titled “Freak Out.”
“There was plenty of food. We had Mexican food and gorditas available for the public,” said Trevizo. Regional foods like churros, a fried-dough pastry, were a popular treat at this year’s carnival. Churros were served in multiple flavors or the crispy treat could be enjoyed plain.
The Benavidez-Patterson “All Airborne” Chapter is available as a military funeral honor guard and special event color guard. To learn more about the chapter, email johceb@msn.com.
