Women from Fort Bliss participated in the annual Women’s Softball League held at Omar Bradley Softball Complex at Fort Bliss May 8.
Heat, sweat, excitement and teamwork are some of the things that begin to describe how the game kicked off.
“It’s been pretty hot out here today, and that has been one of our biggest challenges,” said Ginsie R. Canidate, Army spouse from the team called “Off Constantly.” “Everything’s been going very well, everyone has been positive and having fun with it, which is I think the most important part, to have fun.”
Canidate and her team have been practicing hard for this game and have gotten to know each other in such a short time.

“In this softball game you can have beginners and you can have advanced players, it doesn’t matter as long as everyone has fun,” said Meredith M. Lokkins, recreational aide for Morale, Welfare and Recreation. “For female Soldiers and even spouses, this gives them something to do. It builds in to the community of Fort Bliss and builds teamwork within the military.”
The players had fun during the game, but also gathered new experiences both for the civilians and military females.
“I did this for unit cohesion,” said 1st Lt. Hana Cha, a physician assistant with D Company, 7222nd Medical Support Unit, William Beaumont Army Medical Center. “I thought it would be a good way to get to know my Soldiers better and just to kind of increase motivation and morale amongst our unit. It’s been very fun for our unit.”
Cha thought they had a good opponent with very good sportsmanship.
“Events like this helps build team cohesion, teaches us to work together as a group and to communicate with each other,” said Pfc. Rebecca M. Smith, signal support systems specialist with Headquarters and Headquarters Co., 15th Sustainment Brigade.
The Women’s Softball League continues Friday nights from 6 to 9 p.m. with a championship tournament in August. To learn more, call 744-5793.
