Ask Iron 7 …

Command Sgt. Maj. Ronnie Kelley

Command Sgt. Maj. Ronnie Kelley,
1st AD and Fort Bliss:

Thank you for the questions you have sent so far. This week’s questions focus on 1st Armored Division history.

Question: I was wondering what happened to the 1st AD Museum in Baumholder, Germany? I would like to look at all the pictures of Bosnia back in 1996. - Christine Carrasco

Iron 7: Christine, thank you for your question. The Old Ironsides Museum moved to Fort Bliss in May 2011. It is now co-located with the Fort Bliss Museum at 1735 Marshall Road at West Fort Bliss. The museum is about two-thirds completed – and it looks fantastic. I contacted our museum director, Peter Poessiger, and he has not seen any of the Bosnia pictures yet. But, that doesn’t mean we don’t have them. We are still unpacking boxes, so keep checking back – or better yet, visit us.

The Fort Bliss and Old Ironsides Museums are located at West Fort Bliss, 1735 Marshall Road. The large indoor and outdoor museum spaces feature 1st AD tanks, equipment and exhibits that showcase the division’s history from World War II to present day. Question: My dad was command sergeant major of the 1st Armored Division from 1978 to 1980. Is there a list of all the 1st AD command sergeants major? Can my dad come down to Texas and look at the museum? – Steve Campbell
