Dayley’s Update …
Col. Brant. V. Dayely,
Garrison Commander:
Hello Team Bliss!
Two pieces of good news to pass on to you this week: first, the first edition of the Garrison Newsletter is now available. I recently posted it on my “Tell it to COL D” Facebook page as a photo album. Feel free to submit comments, ideas and stories to Fort Bliss Garrison Public Affairs.
Second, in case you didn’t already know, the Fort Bliss telephone directory and guide is available now at the Fort Bliss Garrison Public Affairs Office, 15 Slater Road. Those who represent units and organizations can come by the building and sign the necessary paperwork.
Aug. 31 is the last military appreciation night with the El Paso Diablos at Cohen Stadium. Tickets are available at both USOs and the Southwest Adventure Outpost at Biggs Park, Leisure Travel Services (ITR) at 1743 Victory Ave., or the satellite ITR at Sgt. Joshua W. Soto Physical Fitness Center at East Fort Bliss. The game starts at 7:05 p.m.
Also, the Soldier Activity Center at East Fort Bliss opened this week. Be sure to stop by and check it out. More information is available on this page at right.
As I mentioned last week, remember to mark your calendars for Aug. 17 through 19, as this is Sales Tax Holiday in Texas, better known as Tax-Free Weekend. To learn more about how you can save money, check out the state’s website at www.window.state.tx.us/taxinfo/taxpubs/taxholiday/d.
Other activities this month include framing classes, which offer an opportunity to learn professional framing techniques for artwork, diplomas or certificates from certified instructors, scheduled for Saturday and Aug. 25. Classes are open to Department of Defense ID holders and their guests. Cost is $30 per person or $25 each for two people. Fees cover all required materials and instruction.
If you’re suffering from wanderlust, consider a weekend backpacking and camping in the Gila National Forest of New Mexico from Friday through Monday. Tickets are $40 per person, which covers transportation, park entry fees, equipment, guide services and some meals. Tickets are available at Southwest Adventure Outpost at Biggs Park and the Main ITR kiosk at Freedom Crossing. Advance purchase is required. To learn more, call 317-5618.
Also, consider cross-country biking as a weekend outing option. Join Southwest Adventure for the ride of a lifetime from Aug. 21 through 31, on a 10-day mountain biking adventure from Durango, Colo., to Moab, Utah. Cover more than 200 miles of challenging territory on a fascinating cross-country ride. Pricing, to be determined, will cover transportation, equipment rental, hut fees and some meals. Tickets are available at Southwest Adventure Outpost at Biggs Park and the Main ITR kiosk at Freedom Crossing. To learn more, call 317-5618.
One more thing – we always welcome feedback on my “Tell it to COL D” Facebook page. This week we received a nice compliment from John Whalen about the Garrison Newsletter: “Great idea! I hope to see more garrisons having pages like this. It really opens up the paths of communications. Keep doing things right, Fort Bliss!”
