Heroes, villains, bounty hunters, toons, serial killers, creatures, celebrities and more from across pop culture gathered at the El Paso Convention and Performing Arts Center Sept. 14 through 16 for the annual El Paso Comic Convention.

Starting with the Friday preview night and continuing through Sunday, El Paso Comic Con boasted a wide assortment of activities. Guests were invited to meet some of their favorite pop culture icons, take photos with other fans in costume, compete in video game matches, shop at vendors and attend informational panel discussions on a variety of topics.

This year’s event had a large turnout of comic book fans, genre fans and regular El Paso residents curious to see what the convention had to offer.

Like most conventions, EPCON had its own array of celebrity and special guests that included actors Michael Biehn (The Terminator, Aliens, Tombstone), Tony Todd (Candyman, The Crow, Platoon), Felix Silla (Addams Family, Buck Rogers, Star Wars, Episode VI: Return of the Jedi) and an array of artists and entertainers.

Over the course of the weekend the convention center also hosted a concurrent music festival that featured local bands sponsored by Wartime Records.

The convention, hosted by the Alien Warrior Comedian of Last Comic Standing fame, also provided an opportunity for fans of different film and television franchises to make connections with each other to share information and discuss their fandom. Information booths for various local clubs and groups were also available so that those interested could find out how to join.

One of the clubs that attended the event was El Paso’s own Vhe’rang Clan costume club. The Vhe’rang Clan is the local chapter of the international Mandalorian Mercs, a costume club that focuses on the creation of Mandalorian armor from Star Wars. During the weekend the group was able to successfully raise money for their local charity by running their popular “Bounty Hunt” where attendees could have friends and family members “arrested” by the Mandalorians for five-minute increments.
