Staff Sgt. Norman Llamas, 11th ADA Public Affairs:
Following a nine-month deployment to Southwest Asia, the 11th Air Defense Artillery “Imperial” Brigade made its return official by uncasing the brigade colors at Patriot Field, Feb. 13.
“It’s great to be home with our loved ones and our Soldiers,” said Col. Clement S. Coward, commander, 11th ADA Bde.
Coward went on to say he is proud of the great job the Soldiers of the Imperial Brigade did while on deployment and also thanked the Soldiers and families who were taking care of business here.
Brig. Gen. James H. Dickinson, commander, 32nd Army Air and Missile Defense Command, thanked the Imperial Brigade for the excellent work they did while deployed and for representing the 32nd AAMDC and the air defense community. Dickinson also talked about all the accomplishments such as the Flight Test Integrated (FTI)-01, joint missile test exercise that Battery A, 2nd Regiment, Terminal High Altitude Area Defense, took part in during the summer, and also the activation of a third THAAD battery, D-2 THAAD, which took place while the Imperial Brigade was deployed.
Even before the brigade’s headquarters detachment departed for their deployment, the brigade already had a battalion downrange; 5th Battalion, 52nd Air Defense Artillery was forward deployed to various Southwest Asia locations and was replaced in early December by 1st Battalion, 43rd Air Defense Artillery.
The Imperial Brigade also has a battalion that conducts ongoing missile tests in coordination with the Missile Defense Agency and various other organizations. The 2nd Battalion, 43rd Air and Missile Defense is the test battalion and will take part in several missile tests in the coming months. The 3rd Battalion, 43rd Air Defense Artillery is currently training to replace 1-43 ADA in Southwest Asia.
There is also ongoing training within the THAAD batteries as they prepare for future overseas assignments.
